I Want the PPC-6700
After taking some time and visiting the Sprint store, I want the Pocket PC 6700. The phone is just too powerful. I am pretty sure that making this purchase will handle any mobile need I have for the next two years. The keyboard felt very natural, the interface flowed well, and the power is undeniable. Besides, I really don’t like the idea of being locked into Sprint’s concept of the internet and that’s what I’d be if I got anything less than a palm or windows mobile device from Sprint. Feels like AOL. I won’t be getting this phone for a month however, because I am eligible for $75 off on April 1st.
Amazing how I’ve eased up on Microsoft as of late. I dunno… seems like after OSX really took off, Microsoft was no longer the big bad wolf that it use to be. It gets bashed so much that it’s becoming sort of an underdog, at least among geeks. I’m looking forward to my bad-ass Windows mobile device. Camera, camcorder, media player, dictation device, modem, groupware, browser, chatting, blogging, coding? Flame on.

Microsoft Teaches PHP, JSP and ColdFusion With “Cross Training”
When I interviewed Andi in the first Pro::PHP Podcast in partnership with PHP|Architect, Andi said that he felt the primary competition for PHP was the .NET platform. With all the the hype surrounding Rails, I wasn’t sure if I completely agreed, but today I think he was spot on. Microsoft has started an initiaitive that, in my opinion, is absolutely brilliant. Why behave as if other languages are competition when you can teach developers how to use said languages, and prove that they integrate well on your platform. Windows is making a strong play for the server market with their “Cross Training for Developers” program. And look at the co-sponsors: O’Reilly and Dr. Dobbs. Not too shabby.
Oh, and if you dig around on the site you will see tutorials on PHP, Java and Coldfusion. Let me warn you, these tutorials serve as little more than safe marketing since they are 2-3 years old, republished and pretty simple. You will also see that if you sign up for three of their webcasts you will get a free copy of Visual Studio 2005, a free book and some other stuff that they don’t tell you about. What better way to fend off the IBM/Eclipse onslaught than start giving away Studio. Whoever said Microsoft wasn’t getting smarter with age was wrong. Now who am I gonna interview at Microsoft to talk about this?

I Wish For A Global Community
I saw my buddy Tim tonight and his discussion of his hometown Syracuse reminded me that I wanted to post the contents of a poster created by the Syracuse Cultural Workers. I don’t have their permission to reprint this, I read it in a book called Beyond the Indigo Children (more on this book later). I REALLY hope that they will allow it to stay posted because it is beautiful and I think more people need to see it. In return, I ask that you visit their site, maybe make a purchase and see if you can help their organization in any way.
A quick note before I post this. In every person’s life they go through phases. I am at a point in my life where money really is not the most important thing. For me this is progress because I think I’ve been a little consumed for the last two years. Raising kids can do that to you.
I am starting to look at the world that they are going to inherit and it is becoming blatantly clear to me that the greatest gift I can give them is my best effort to make this world a better place in the best way I know how. Racism, xenophobia, missuse of the earth, materialism, improper education and violence are all things that I want to see an end to, or at least a sharp decline. I think that this poster gives me enough ways that I can begin to work with others toward a positive change. After reading (and commenting on) a post by Tim on his blog I realized that attempting to understand from each other’s perspective is so important in this polarized world we live in.
Without saying anymore, here is “How To Build Global Community”
HOW TO BUILD GLOBAL COMMUNITY
as put forth by the Syracuse Cultural Workers
Think of no one as “them”Don’t confuse your comfort with your safety
Talk to strangers
Imagine other cultures through their poetry and novels
Listen to music you don’t understand
Dance to it
Act locally
Notice the workings of power and priveldge in your culture
Question consumption
Know how your lettuce and coffee are grown: Wake up and smell the exploitation
Look for fair trade and union labels
Help build economies from the bottom up
Aquire few needs
Learn a second (or third) language
Visit people, places and cultures-not tourist attractions
Learn people’s history
Redefine progress
Know physical and political geography
Play games from other culturesWatch films with subtitles
Know your heritage
Honor everyone’s holidays
Look at the moon and imagine some else, somewhere else, looking at it too
Read the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Understand the global economy in terms of people, land, and water
Know where your bank banks
Never believe you have a right to anyone else’s resources
Refuse to wear corporate logos: Defy corporate domination
Question military/corporate connections
Don’t confuse money with wealth, or time with money
Have a pen/e-mail pal
Honor indigenous cultures
Judge governance by how well it meets all people’s needs
Be skeptical about what you read
Eat adventurously
Enjoy vegetables, beans and grains in your diet
Choose curiousity over certainty
Know where your water comes from and where your wastes go
Pledge allegiance to the Earth: Question nationalism
Think South, Central, North- There are many Americans
Assume that many others share your dreams
Know that no one is silent though many are not heard- work to change this

My Sprint Mobile Phone
I’m tired of posting about mobile devices without actually having one. I am going to make the purchase by next week and stop waiting for the perfect device. My service is with Sprint/Nextel so my choices aren’t that great but given their recent 53% slip in profits it won’t be log before they come out with some better phones. Hell, I seriously considered moving to T-Mobile after I saw the MDA which is slick beyond words. But, the real reason I need to commit is so that I actually know what the hell I’m talking about and I can start developing mobile apps.
So, I’m taking all suggestions based on Sprint’s limited choices and I will make a purchase next week. Jackson has the A900 and seems to like it. I was leaning toward a more powerul device with a QWERTY keyboard that I can actually use for more than uploading photos. Sidekick style would be the best for me, and Treo style would be the worst. I HATE the stylus, so that is not a plus for me. A nice camera should be standard. A great browser would be nice. Support for Bluetooth, EV-DO and a bluetooth headset are pretty much required as they would justify the purchase. Russell Beattie seems to think that Windows is not the ideal platform for mobile apps, and since I don’t want to try and figure that out I’m gonna try and use stuff like Flash Lite and Opera Mini for development. Anyone have any insight you can lend?
